Traveling is rarely cheap, which is why people are always looking for ways to save money when they do it. This is why travel credit cards are so popular. Let’s take a look at the top 5, as ranked by CreditCardForum.com’s credit card reviews. Here they are:
1. American Express Platinum Card
The AmEx Platinum Card has a high annual fee of $450, but if you travel a lot, then it’s probably worth it. Why? Because not only do you earn points on spending with the card, but you will also be eligible for free perks at their partner hotels, which include things like 4:00 pm late check out, free night, a free dining credit, etc. At airports, you will also get complimentary access to the VIP lounges (normally you need a first class ticket to get in).
2. American Express Gold Card
For those that travel a moderate amount, then the American Express Gold Card is probably a better choice. For the “Premier Rewards” version of the Gold Card, the annual fee is $175. This is still high, but the card does come with some impressive travel benefits. For example, you get a free $100 travel credit annually through American Express Travel. You also get travel accident insurance and other related services. The American Express Gold Card also gives higher points on airfare and gas purchases, too.
3. Diners Club Carte Blanche Card
Diners Club was the first charge card in the world, but over the past few decades, they have become less popular. However they still have the Carte Blanche card, which is an excellent travel rewards credit card. It does have a $300 annual fee, and like the AmEx Platinum Card, is probably only suitable for those that travel frequently. Benefits include British Airways companion tickets, travel insurance, concierge-type service, and other things to make your travels easier.
4. Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card
The Starwood Preferred Guest credit card is offered by American Express. If you travel frequently and stay as a guest at Starwood affiliated hotels (Sheraton, Westin, The W, Le Meridian, and others) then this is a great credit card to have. For starters, the card usually comes with a lucrative signup bonus for free nights at their hotel. Points are earned on spending which can be redeemed for stays at Starwood hotels or they can be converted to airline frequent flyer programs. The annual fee for the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card is $45.
5. U.S. Bank Flex Perks Visa
This credit card is mainly geared towards those that are looking to earn airline miles. The annual fee is $49 but it is waived if you spend at $24,000 or more on the card per year. The card gives you double points on one of the following categories each month (gas, groceries, airfare purchase). Whichever of those categories you spend the most that month, you will get the double points for. All other purchases are only one point.
